What makes you?
Is it your mind? Your memories and experiences? Your DNA? Personality and character traits? And can you affect it?
Your response gives an insight into your mindset. A mindset is a belief that you have about yourself and your fundamental qualities like ability or talent.
If you have a fixed mindset then you believe that fundamental qualities like intelligence are stable and do not change over time.
In contrast, a belief in growth mindset means you believe that these qualities can be developed and nurtured.
There is a simple and effective way of measuring your mindset. It is an indication only and might be useful for research purposes.
Read each sentence below and assign a number 1 – 6 that shows the degree to which you agree with it1. There are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers.
1. Strongly agree
3. Mostly agree
4. Mostly disagree
6. Strongly disagree
You have a certain amount of intelligence and you really can’t do much to change it.
1 2 3 4 5 6
Your intelligence is something about you that you can’t change very much.
1 2 3 4 5 6
You can learn new things, but you can’t really change your basic intelligence.
1 2 3 4 5 6
What’s your score?
From your responses to these three questions, calculate your average score.
An average score of 1 – 3 suggests a strongly or mildly fixed mindset, and 4 – 6 suggests a mildly or strongly growth mindset.
If your average score is 6 then you’re probably a ‘tiger’ with a rampant growth mindset.
If you scored 1, have a good long think about what you might do differently.
Mindsets really, really matter. Carol Dweck2 and other mindset researchers have provided strong evidence that people with growth mindsets are more:
– Open to challenges and constructive critical feedback
– Resilient in the face of obstacles and initial failure
– Convinced that individual effort makes a difference
– Likely to attribute success and failure to their own efforts, rather than to their innate abilities
– Able to learn well with and from others
– Likely to rise to the top and stay there
Wouldn’t you want to have more of these qualities to help you navigate your way through life?
How did you rate and what are you going to do about it?
